A 17-year-old boy died Friday after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a Mattituck home, according to Southold Town police.

Police and members of the Mattituck Fire Department were called to a residence on Bennetts Pond Lane at approximately 12:53 p.m. Friday for a report of an unresponsive person in a pool.

The teenager had been removed from the water before first responders arrived and was not breathing, police said. Emergency personnel began lifesaving efforts but were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead.

Police did not release additional information about the circumstances surrounding his death, but said no criminality is suspected at this time.

The Southold Town Police Department Detective Division is investigating the death in conjunction with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office.

In a statement, the department extended its condolences to the teenager’s family and others affected by his death.
