Although the residents of the East End are uniquely blessed with a remarkable number of quality local media outlets, the arrival of the North Fork Sun is a vital addition to our community.
In launching the North Fork Sun, we celebrate more than just a new news website — we celebrate the assertion of journalistic integrity at a time when it’s needed more than ever. The words of philosopher Hannah Arendt, in her essay Truth and Politics ring especially true: “Facts are stubborn things, but they are not impervious to attack; they are more fragile than theories. Factual truth, like all truth, is always at the mercy of power.”
When misinformation spreads faster than truth and public trust in institutions and politicians erodes, local independent journalism has the power to act as both shield and sword —defending facts and attacking falsehoods.
A shining example of this kind of truth-seeking and truth-telling is clearly visible in the work of the North Fork Sun publisher Chris Francescani, whose tenure as an investigative reporter has left an indelible mark on our community. Chris’s fearless pursuit of accountability — most recently in Greenport village — demonstrated not only journalistic skill, but a fearless dedication to the public interest.
He gave voice to facts that were hidden, returning power to the community by providing vital information and context. This is not to say that other local independent media outlets didn’t fulfill their journalistic responsibility, only that Chris has a uniquely sharp eye and strong spine.
This kind of impact is not easily replicated – especially in a small town – which is why the founding of The North Fork Sun is so significant. Chris’s leadership and the mission of the Sun are a critical line of defense for democracy on the East End.
Let us welcome the North Fork Sun not only with enthusiasm, but with honest engagement and a shared commitment to the truth. When local news thrives, communities do too. And if any of us happens to end up on the wrong side of the truth or the law, we can surely expect Chris and his team to be there waiting.
