The historic tall ship Kalmar Nyckel will return to Greenport July 20-26, offering a week of public sailing excursions and free deck tours alongside the East End Seaport Museum.
Docked at 100 Third St., the 17th-century square-rigged vessel will take passengers on 2½-hour sails on Long Island Sound, where guests can help raise sails, haul lines and even steer the ship under the guidance of the volunteer crew. Each voyage follows the wind and weather, making every trip unique.
“We’re always excited to return to Greenport,” Ship’s Master Capt. Lauren Morgens said in a statement. “The North Fork community has enthusiastically welcomed the ship over the years, and we’re looking forward to sharing another week of maritime history, hands-on learning and unforgettable experiences with local residents and visitors alike.”
Public sail tickets cost $85 for adults and $50 for children 12 and younger. Organizers recommend purchasing tickets in advance, as sailings often sell out.
Those who prefer to stay ashore can tour the ship free of charge from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, July 25. Crew members will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the vessel’s history, construction and voyages.
The Kalmar Nyckel, known as the Tall Ship of Delaware, has made Greenport a regular stop in recent years, drawing visitors interested in experiencing traditional sailing and maritime history firsthand. All sail schedules are weather dependent.
