Runners will have a chance to chase more than a personal best when the Southold School Athletic Association holds its annual 5K on Halloween this year.

The association’s 13th annual race is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, and organizers are embracing the coincidence with costumes, prizes and a “Boo Crew” fun run for younger children.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Southold School Athletic Association, which supports student scholarships, athletic programs and sporting events throughout the school year.

Runners and walkers are encouraged to arrive in costume, with prizes planned for the best individual and group costumes in adult and under-21 categories.

And the Halloween festivities will continue after the 5K. At 9:45 a.m., the Southold PTA will host a Boo Crew Fun Run for children 12 and younger, along with food, activities and additional Halloween festivities.

This year’s race shirts will also have a local connection. Students at Southold Elementary School and Southold Junior-Senior High School are competing to design the T-shirt for the event. The first 50 people to register for the 5K will receive one free, and shirts will also be available for purchase on race day.

Discounted advance registration and student rates are available, although runners can also sign up on race day.
