As a former member of the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force, I have always understood the importance of its mission: to promote diversity, unity, and understanding within our community. The task force exists to support educational and group activities, as well as legal and legislative efforts, that seek to eliminate all forms of bias and prejudice.

It is with deep concern that I address recent behavior from the secretary of the task force that stands in direct contradiction to these values.

Remarks targeting a political opponent’s sexual orientation—particularly when made by individuals associated with the Anti-Bias Task Force—undermine the integrity of the committee and the trust the public places in it.

There is no place for personal attacks rooted in identity within any space claiming to champion equity and justice.

Those who serve on the Anti-Bias Task Force must maintain a standard of impartiality, respect, and inclusion.

I believe it’s time Town Hall revisits whether members of political committees should be allowed to serve on the Anti-Bias Task Force.
