The North Fork Audubon Society will hold its annual Fall Native Plant Sale Sept. 19 and 20 at Inlet Pond County Park in Greenport, offering more than 60 species native to the northeastern United States.

The sale, which the organization says is the longest-running native plant sale on the East End, will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days at the Roy Latham Nature Center, 65275 County Route 48. No pre-ordering is required, and a complete list of available species will be posted on the Audubon Society’s website one week before the sale.

The locally grown plants, supplied by Glover Perennials, will include varieties that are drought tolerant and deer resistant. Organizers say fall is an especially good time to establish native perennials, grasses, trees and shrubs because cooler temperatures reduce plant stress while warm soil encourages root development.

Visitors will also be able to explore the Audubon Society’s native landscaping at Inlet Pond County Park, where volunteers have developed a rain garden, native grassland and a “Berries for Birds” garden designed to provide food for migrating and overwintering birds. According to the organization, volunteers have removed more than 12,000 invasive privets along trails leading to Long Island Sound and have worked to replace invasive vegetation with native trees and plants.

Proceeds from the spring and fall plant sales support the Audubon Society’s ongoing habitat restoration projects at Inlet Pond County Park. The volunteer-run organization, founded in 1971, promotes conservation and wildlife habitat through education and hands-on programs.

Cash, checks, credit cards, Venmo and PayPal will be accepted at the sale.
