The work of East End photographers will take center stage in Greenport on Saturday, Oct. 24, when the North Fork Arts Center opens IMPACT, its inaugural juried photography exhibition, featuring 100 photographs selected from more than 460 submissions.

The exhibition, organized by North Fork photographers Paul Henry and Jeremy Garretson in partnership with the arts center, drew entries from 176 local artists. A blind jury process determined which photographs would be displayed, with selections based solely on the merits of the images.

The opening celebration, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the North Fork Arts Center Gallery, 211 Front St., will feature two panel discussions with prominent photographers and editors, followed by a public reception where visitors can meet the participating artists and view their work.

The first discussion, “Through the Juror’s Eye: Selecting the Winning Photographs,” runs from 2 to 3 p.m. and will explore what makes a photograph stand out from hundreds of submissions — and why certain images capture viewers’ attention and remain memorable.

Panelists include Amnon Bar-Tur, a photographer, photojournalist and co-founder of the international BarTur Photo Award; Jim Willse, former editor of the New York Daily News and The Star-Ledger and the National Press Foundation’s 1999 Editor of the Year; and Harvey Stein, a photographer, educator and author of 10 photography books.

From 3 to 4 p.m., “On Assignment: Celebrity Photography” will bring together three photographers whose work has captured some of the entertainment world’s most recognizable figures.

Guerin Blask, whose celebrity portraits have appeared in TIME, Billboard and The New York Times, will join Macall Polay, a film and television stills photographer whose credits include Game of Thrones, A Complete Unknown and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Also participating is Deborah Feingold, known for her portraits of Madonna, Brooke Shields and Barack Obama.

An opening reception will follow from 4 to 6 p.m., offering visitors an opportunity to meet the artists and explore the exhibition.

“It’s exciting to bring IMPACT to the community through the North Fork Arts Center,” Henry said. “This is exactly what an arts center should be.”

IMPACT will remain on view through Nov. 22. The opening events and exhibition are free and open to the public.
