Jamesport Meeting House

Residents looking to better prepare for emergencies will have an opportunity next month. The Greater Jamesport Civic Association will host a free New York State Citizen Preparedness Training class at the Jamesport Meeting House.

The training session will take place Thursday, June 11, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the historic meeting house, located at 1590 Main Road in Jamesport. The event is free and open to the public. However, advance registration is required.

Developed by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the program is designed to help individuals and families prepare for both natural and man-made disasters. Participants will learn how to create a family emergency plan. They will also learn to assemble and maintain emergency supply kits. Moreover, they will discover how to access tools and resources that can help them respond safely during emergencies.

Organizers said the training comes at a particularly timely moment. Hurricane season begins June 1. Many Long Islanders still recall the severe winter weather that affected the region earlier this year.

“The safety of area residents is a priority for our organization,” said Greater Jamesport Civic Association President Laura Jens-Smith. “With the start of hurricane season on June first and the brutal weather this past winter, we are more aware of the importance of emergency planning and preparation. We encourage all area residents to attend this training event.”

An added incentive is available if attendance goals are met. Organizers said that if 50 or more people register in advance, each household represented at the training will receive a free emergency preparedness “go bag” containing basic supplies and preparedness materials.

Parking will be available at the George Young Community Center, located at the southeast corner of Main Road and South Jamesport Avenue.
