A serious motor vehicle accident late Monday morning has shut down Route 48 in both directions near Tuckers Lane. As of 1 p.m. Monday, Route 48 is closed eastbound at Ackerly Pond Lane and westbound at Hortons Lane, according to Southold police officials.
The crash involved two vehicles, authorities said. One was a Porsche SUV operated by a 77-year-old male, and the other was a Bronco operated by a 39-year-old female. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
The Bronco was traveling eastbound on Route 48, and the Porsche was traveling north on Tuckers Lane. The Porsche appears to have pulled out from Tuckers and failed to yield to the eastbound Bronco, resulting in the collision, according to police.
Southold and Cutchogue’s fire departments responded. The male driver of the Porsche had to be extricated from the vehicle. Both drivers were transported to area hospitals. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

This perfectly shows why there are so many accidents there. Where the blue vehicle is parked on the right: all those shrubs and trees need to be cut down, pruned and limbed up so that people pulling out of Tuckers Lane can see oncoming eastbound traffic. The overgrown shrubs and trees create a blind spot. It is a corner and Southold town has a corner code: 30’/30’/30”. Needs to be enforced.
