Last week, Southold police had their hands full with a variety of incidents ranging from unwanted texts and an inter-family passport dispute to a propane leak, a stray shotgun shell discovered beside a full beer, an arrest involving brass knuckles and a “slapper” — and a spate of late December DWI arrests. They also responded in person to numerous accidentally-dialed 911 calls, including one involving a young child playing with an adult’s cell phone.
Dec. 15 – Around 8 a.m., a male Greenport teenager contacted police to report that an East Marion teen who is dating his former partner has repeatedly contacted him through text messages and phone calls, and he no longer wishes to speak to him. Police contacted the East Marion teen and explained that he needs to stop contacting the other young man, and he agreed. The Greenport teen declined to pursue charges, according to a police report.
Around 11 a.m., a Greenport woman contacted police to say that another Greenport woman is inside her residence and she no longer wants her in the home. The first woman declined to sign a notice of trespass against the second woman — who agreed to leave without incident, according to a police report.
About five hours later, a 73-year-old Shelter Island man reported a disturbance involving the same woman at the Greenport ferry dock. According to a police report, Latricia Lawrence, 47, of Greenport and Victor Leverett, 61, of Greenport were served trespass notices after complaints that the pair were drinking alcohol inside the North Ferry Terminal and creating a “loud and obnoxious environment.” Both individuals were advised that they would be arrested if they returned to the terminal. Six days later, Lawrence, allegedly intoxicated, was removed by police from an apartment on North St. in Greenport, at the request of the person who lived there, according to a report.
Around 10 p.m., Southold police and Greenport firefighters responded to Third St. in Greenport for a report of a gaseous odor in the area, and discovered a small leak in a pipe fitting coming from a propane tank belonging to a local merchant. Firefighters turned off the propane feed from the tank, according to a report.
Dec. 16 – Around 8:30 a.m., following a traffic stop near Hortons Lane and Middle Road in Southold, Robert Spalma, 37, of Lake Grove, was arrested on two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, after police said they found brass knuckles and a “slapper” in Spalma’s car, according to a police report. Both weapons are illegal for civilians to possess in New York state. The dictionary definition of a slapper is a “small, usually leather-covered club weighted at one end and used as a weapon.” Other descriptions characterize it as a “flexible impact” weapon, meant for driving cattle and consisting of a leather pouch filled with lead or other weighted material attached to a small handle.
Dec. 17 – Around 4 p.m., an anonymous caller contacted police to report finding a shotgun shell beside a full beer at a location on Sound Road in Greenport West. Responding officers determined the shotgun shell had already been fired and was rusty inside with mud. They disposed of the shell and emptied the beer, according to a police report.
Around 5 p.m., a Greenport West woman, 18, and her boyfriend, 20, reported that her parents had taken possession of her passport and wouldn’t give it to her and that the couple were scheduled to fly to Guatemala that night. Police contacted the woman’s father and advised him that his daughter is an adult and that he must return the passport to her — which he did, according to a police report.
Dec. 19 – Around 8 a.m., Gillian Gargiulo, 41, of Lake Ronkonkoma turned herself in to Southold police on an outstanding bench warrant, according to a police report.
Around 8 p.m., Santiago Garcia, 25, of Greenport, was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated after an officer observed the car he was later determined to be driving cross over the double yellow lines on North Road in Southold, “causing the operator to travel eastbound in the westbound lane,” according to a police report. During a traffic stop, Garcia was “observed to have bloodshot, glassy eyes” and smelled of alcohol, the report said. He was arrested after allegedly performing poorly on field sobriety tests.
Around 10 p.m., Nicolas Andreadis, 25, of Mattituck, was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated, following a single-vehicle crash on Cox Neck Road near Rosewood Drive in Mattituck, according to a police report. Andreadis told police he came around a corner too fast and lost control of his vehicle, the report states. He was “observed to have bloodshot, glassy eyes,” smelled of alcohol, slurred his speech and performed poorly on field sobriety tests, according to the report.
Dec. 21 – Around 2:30 a.m., Connor Stepnoski, 33, of Greenport West was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, following a stop for a traffic violation, according to a police report.
Around 8 p.m., Donna Marcotrigiano, 60, of Greenport West, was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, following an incident in which she allegedly crashed into a parked, unoccupied vehicle on Hummel Ave. in Southold, according to a police report.
