On July 19 around 8 p.m., police received a report from the manager of a Third St. restaurant, about a patron who had eaten there and — when the $51.86 bill came — claimed to have lost his wallet. According to police, an employee of a First St. restaurant happened to be in the Third St. restaurant at the time and recognized the man, later identified as Jeffrey Thomas, 64, with no known address.

She told the Third St. restaurant manager that Thomas had eaten a meal at the restaurant where she works earlier in the day, and had also claimed to have lost his wallet after completing his meal. When confronted at the Third St. restaurant, Thomas claimed to need medical attention, and was transported by the Greenport Fire Dept. rescue squad to a nearby hospital for evaluation, according to police.

The following day, an employee of a third restaurant on Main Rd. in Southold reported that a man in a wheelchair was “acting aggressive towards patrons.” Responding officers identified Thomas, who claimed he had “just been sitting” in the area, and left without incident. A couple of hours later, a staffer at a fourth Southold restaurant, also on Main Rd., reported to police that Thomas had eaten a meal there without paying and then requested 911 for an unspecified medical emergency. This time a Southold Fire Dept. rescue team transported him to a second nearby hospital for evaluation.

On July 14, police received a report that a man was sleeping in a gazebo on Front St. Michael Estrado, 24, with no known address, was advised to leave the area and notice of trespass was completed, according to police.

On July 15, a Front St. store owner contacted police to report that Gustavo Estrada-Ramirez, 51, with no known address, was “harassing customers, asking for money and acting aggressive.” The store owner told a responding officer there has been an ongoing issue with Estrada-Ramirez’ behavior and signed a trespass notice barring him from congregrating in front of the store.

On July 15, a Front St. hotel employee contacted police to report a man at the hotel “telling patrons he is being hunted” and making “confusing statements.” After consultation with a social worker, the man was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

On July 15, a Main Rd. resident in East Marion reported to police that when he opened his front door to retrieve some Amazon packages, an unidentified male in a collared shirt and flip-flops was “hiding” behind a telephone pole in front of the house. The homeowner went to get a bat and when he returned, the man in flip-flops had disappeared. Police canvassed the area without success.

On July 16, a Bay Shore Road resident in Greenport called police to say that her neighbor, who had been “experiencing issues with geese on his front lawn,” had installed “a wood plank with rusty nails” on the steps leading to his residence. A responding officer spoke with the neighbor, who said a friend had suggested using the nail-studded plank to keep the geese away. The officer advised him of the danger “to the public as well as the geese,” and the man agreed to remove the plank.

On July 16, Iftar Kucuk, 32, of Greenport was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, after police say his vehicle collided with the back of a Suffolk County Transit bus near Middle Road and Cox Lane in Cutchogue.

On July 17, a Southold resident reported receiving a bizarre phone call. She said a caller with “an Indian accent,” whose number came up on her phone as the Southold Police Dept., claimed to be police officer Steve Grattan — the same name as the Southold Police Chief. The man told her he had been informed by Homeland Security that her name had come up in a money-laundering investigation. When she questioned him further, he claimed to be from the NYPD. The woman then hung up and contacted police.

On July 18, a clerk at the 7-Eleven in Greenport contacted police to report a young woman who had left the store without paying for unidentified drinks. A responding officer located the woman, a 19-year-old from Canada, and observed her “throwing containers of ‘Beat Box’ malt liquor into the bushes. She was escorted back to the store, where the clerk signed a notice of trespass against her, barring her from returning to the store.  

On July 18, Troy Poteet, 64, of Greenport, was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, in a gas station parking lot on Main St. in Greenport.

Around 2 a.m. on July 19, police received a report of man “attempting to fight people” at a Front St. tavern. The individual, a 22-year-old Southold man, was “intoxicated and uncooperative.” Police interviewed several witnesses who said the man was “just verbally attempting to get someone to fight him and he did not physically hit anyone.” He left the tavern on foot, according to a police report.

In the early morning on July 20, Delmy Pantaleon Veliz, 33, of Greenport, was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, after allegedly failing to maintain his lane while driving in Cutchogue.

On July 20, Liam McShane, 26, of Cutchogue was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, after he was discovered standing outside his vehicle on Middle Rd. around 3:30 a.m. According to police, McShane had “bloodshot, glassy eyes” and stated that he “had a couple of beers, IPAs.”

On July 20, police received a report from an Orient East Marion Park District employee, who reported that someone had dumped all the garbage out of a garbage can in the parking lot and stole the can.

On July 20, a First St. resident reported the theft of his unlocked bicycle from his front porch sometime overnight.
