Two separate fires within less than two hours early Saturday morning drew a major response from multiple Southold Town fire departments and prompted investigations by the Suffolk County Arson Squad.

The first fire was reported at about 3:55 a.m. at a residence on Sage Boulevard in Greenport, according to Southold Town Police.

Police and firefighters arrived to find the structure already heavily involved, with flames quickly spreading and ultimately engulfing the entire structure. All occupants were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.

Fire crews from Greenport, East Marion, Southold, Cutchogue and Orient responded to battle the Sage Blvd. blaze.

Less than two hours later, at about 5:36 a.m., emergency crews were dispatched to a second fire at the Southold Town Transfer Station on Cox Lane in Cutchogue.

Responding police and firefighters found a payloader fully engulfed in flames. Officials said the fire spread to a second payloader parked nearby before crews brought the situation under control.

Firefighters from Cutchogue, Southold, Mattituck and Orient responded to extinguish the fire.

Despite the damage, town officials said the transfer station is expected to open Saturday following completion of cleanup operations.

Southold Town Police detectives and the Suffolk County Arson Squad are investigating the cause of both fires. No additional information was immediately available Saturday morning.
