<p>A drunken, glass-smashing barber, a punch over a game of pool, a Labor Day ruined by landscapers and a missing dog-tooth necklace named “Peaches” kept Southold Town police busy this week. Officers also refereed a dispute over a traffic cone, investigated a pungent odor that grew stronger after dark and responded to a report of men urinating along Main Road — only to learn they had pulled over for something else entirely.</p>
<p>But one call was considerably more troubling: Police investigated a report that a Greenport man — known to Southold police — allegedly tried to lure a child from a Greenport West yard. A babysitter and the child told police they heard him ask, “Do you want to come with me?” Officers later located the 24-year-old Greenport man carrying a kitchen knife in his hoodie pocket, police said.</p>
<h2 id="h-bad-hair-day">Bad hair day </h2>
<p><strong>Sept. 7</strong> - Around 1 a.m., police were called to Second St. in Greenport for a report that the rear window of a parked vehicle was “completely shattered,” beside a broken Corona beer bottle, which was found nearby. A witness and the car’s owner both told police that the culprit was a 24-year-old who is “their friend and personal barber,” according to a report. The witness told police that the suspect “was not upset” with the witness and car owner and “believed he was just intoxicated and acting reckless.” The car’s owner declined to press charges, wishing only to document the incident and have the boozy barber pay for the damages.</p>
<p>Around 5:30 a.m., police were called back to Greenport, this time to the Adams St. parking lot behind Front St., for a report of “an unknown issue involving a cat and a vehicle.” Upon arrival, police spoke with a 23-year-old, who “reported negative issues and stated he had changed his mind and no longer wished to document the incident.”</p>
<p>Around noon, police received a report that “multiple vehicles towing boats keep speeding up and down the road” near Manhasset Ave. and Inlet Lane in Greenport. Police canvassed the area without success. An hour later, police received a second anonymous report, this time of a “green dirt bike traveling at a high rate of speed” in the area of Sixth St. and Oak St. in Greenport. They again canvassed the area, without success.</p>
<p>Around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a residence on Bay Shore Road in Greenport West, where a homeowner reported that kayakers came onto the beach past the high tide mark at Conklin Point. The resident advised the kayakers that they were on a private beach, and “a brief verbal altercation ensued.” Police spoke to the kayakers at their residence on the same street, who told them the complainant, a 64-year-old woman “was being aggressive and yelling at him to get off her property.”</p>
<p>Around 2:45 p.m., police received a trio of anonymous calls from the same person, reporting that “his neighbors had landscapers working on a holiday and it was ruining his Labor Day.” The landscapers were gone when police arrived, according to a report.</p>
<h2 id="h-nothing-to-sea-here">Nothing to sea here </h2>
<p>Around 4:15 p.m., police received an anonymous complaint about a “boat traveling near the shoreline at a high rate of speed” off Main Road in Orient. A responding officer “observed a boat at a safe distance off shore, traveling at a reasonable speed.” The officer asked some people on the beach if they had noticed the boat come closer to shore. “All … responded that the boat has remained at a safe distance [from the beach] and was not disturbing anyone.”</p>
<p>Around 4:30 p.m., a 61-year-old man reported that his vehicle “catching fire while driving it” on Aldrich Lane in Laurel. Police and Mattituck firefighters responded, and firefighters extinguished the fire. The driver told police he had been “having electrical issues” with the vehicle, which was pushed back to the man’s driveway.</p>
<h2 id="h-a-tooth-named-peaches">A tooth named 'Peaches'</h2>
<p>Around 6:30 p.m., a Southold man approached a patrol officer in Greenport to report losing a “custom made dog tooth necklace with the word ‘peaches’ around the tooth,” with the wording and the chain made of silver. The man requested a lost property report, and an officer told him that police headquarters would contact him if the item turns up or is turned in.</p>
<p>Shortly before 10 p.m., police received an anonymous report of “screams coming from the bay” off Main Road in East Marion. Responding officers did not hear any noise or see anyone in distress, but canvassed the area anyway.</p>
<p><strong>Sept. 8</strong> – Around 11:30 a.m., police received a report of a “foul smell” coming from the backyard of a home on Main Road in East Marion. Police investigated, and found a dead deer.</p>
<p>Around 3:15 p.m., police were called to a local hospital for a report of a patient “refusing to leave the emergency room.” The patient, <strong>Gloria Fulton</strong>, 60, of Patchogue, was found to have an active arrest warrant from Southold Town Justice Court, and was placed under arrest.</p>
<p>Around 11 p.m., police were called to a location near Pacific St. and Sound Ave. in Mattituck for a report of a silver sedan with a “possible intoxicated driver.” Police canvassed the area, but were unable to locate such a vehicle.</p>
<p><strong>Sept. 9</strong> – Around 10 a.m., police responded to a residence on Orchard St. in New Suffolk, for a report of tools missing from a vehicle. The complainant told police he parked the vehicle shortly before midnight the previous night, and when he came out in the morning, a “ladder and rolling tool cart” were gone. Police noted that in the bed of the vehicle, they found an unlocked tool box “containing expensive tools” that remained undisturbed. Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate any surveillance cameras in the neighborhood.</p>
<h2 id="h-the-buck-stops-here">The buck stops here</h2>
<p>Around 3 p.m., police responded to a call on Paddock Way in Mattituck, concerning a deer hunter. A homeowner claimed the hunter was “illegally scouting deer” on private property. He told police neither himself nor any of the other nearby property owners had given the hunter permission to hunt on their property. The hunter told police he did in fact have permission to be hunting “but did not wish to provide the [officer] with the information of who gave him permission.” The complainant told police he intended to contact all the other home owners in the area and have each one sign a notice of trespass against the hunter, a 59-year-old Lindenhurst man. Police told the hunter that Paddock Way is a private road and that they would recontact him if a notice of trespass is signed by the homeowners. A DEC officer was also notified of the incident, according to a report. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Around 8 p.m., police were called to Carpenter St. for a report of several cars parked in a “no parking” zone. Responding officers found the owners of the vehicles, who agreed to move their cars. But a police report notes that there are two signs in the area in question, one that reads “No Parking Any Time” and another that reads “No Parking Here to Corner.” “The village has been notified of these signs, as they are causing confusion amongst travellers,” a police report notes.</p>
<h2 id="h-a-bad-break">A bad break</h2>
<p>Just before midnight, police were called to a Front St. bar in Greenport after a dispute over a game of pool. A 24-year-old Chatham, N.J., man told police a 28-year-old Riverhead man punched him in the stomach after he tried to apologize. The Riverhead man said the other man repeatedly invaded his personal space and that he merely “tapped” him in the stomach to get him to back away. Police reviewed surveillance video, which showed the Chatham man repeatedly approaching the Riverhead man despite efforts to keep him at a distance, before the Riverhead man could be seen “striking” him. “Both [men] were intoxicated,” the report noted.</p>
<p><strong>Sept. 10</strong> – Around 9:30 a.m., police were called to Mitchell Park for a report of two possibly intoxicated men in the park. Both men, who known to local police, left the area without incident.</p>
<p>Around 11 a.m., police received a report of a package being stolen off a front porch on Second St. in Greenport. An investigation is ongoing.</p>
<h2 id="h-man-found-with-knife-after-report-of-attempt-to-lure-a-child">Man found with knife after report of attempt to lure a child</h2>
<p>Around 6 p.m., police received a report from a Greenport West woman who said a “male subject” was “attempting to lure her child from the yard.” Police interviewed the child’s babysitter, and two young children who were in the yard at the time. The babysitter said she heard “a male’s voice stating ‘do you want to come with me,’” according to a police report. The babysitter called the juveniles to come inside the house, while the male in question “left the area.” Police interviewed one of the children in the presence of her father, and she also stated that the man had said “do you want to come with me,” and that she then ran away from him. Police located the man in question, a 24-year-old Greenport man, at the corner of Front St. and Sixth St., with a kitchen knife in the front pocket of his hoodie, according to a report. The man, who denied making the statement, was handcuffed while police secured the knife. The man told police he was carrying the knife “because he was going into the woods to cook with his friends.” Police transported the man to his residence, and told him to stay away from the family, as they do “not feel comfortable with him being in the area.”</p>
<p>The Greenport man found with the knife is known to local police, according to a review of police records. In February, he was accused of stealing two cans of Four Loco alcohol from a local 7-Eleven, but the clerk declined to press charges. In May, a convenience store clerk on Front St. signed a notice of trespass against him, barring him from the store following an alleged verbal altercation, records show. In June of last year, he was arrested for allegedly kicking the door down of a tenant who rented a room in his South St. apartment, according to a police report, and in July of last year, he was <a href="https://northforksun.com/alleged-restaurant-grifter-strikes-again-and-again/">arrested</a> again by Southold police on an unspecified outstanding warrant.</p>
<h2 id="h-not-that-kind-of-pit-stop">Not that kind of pit stop </h2>
<p>Around 8 p.m., police received a call about “males subjects urinating and possibly consuming alcohol near the roadway” along Main Road in East Marion. Responding officers spoke to a 29-year-old Greenport West man, who told cops he wasn’t peeing or drinking, but instead “pulled over to observe a DOA [dead on arrival] deer in the roadway.” Police observed the dead deer themselves, and contacted state police for removal of the carcass.</p>
<p>Around 11:30 p.m., police were called to a location near the corner of Arshamomaque Ave. and Orchard Road in Southold for a report of a “pungent odor” that had first been smelled earlier in the day but had become “more potent” as evening set in. It was described as a “strong fertilizer smell.” Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate the source of the smell. They advised the complainant to contact police again in the morning if the smell persists, and a more thorough search of the area could be conducted.</p>
<h2 id="h-cone-rage">Cone rage </h2>
<p><strong>Sept. 11</strong> – Around 8 a.m., police received a report from a Sterlington Commons resident in Greenport, in which a 52-year-old Greenport woman claimed that a 56-year-old neighbor had “stolen her traffic cone from a [restaurant]-assigned parking space.” She told police she observed the man “run over her traffic cone multiple times, and that he had also moved it behind a gate fence in the corner of Sterlington Commons.” Police spoke to the 56-year-old, who told them “he did not steal the traffic cone, but did see a cone placed in the corner of Sterlington Commons.” The man agreed to be more “mindful” of traffic cones in the future.</p>
<p>Around 11:30 a.m. police were called to Southold Town Justice Court for a report of a disturbance, and arrested 22-year-old <strong>Jonathan Coonan</strong> of Mastic.</p>
<p>Around 1:30 p.m., police were called to Main Road in Cutchogue for a report of a group of cyclists “riding four across the roadway.” A responding officer located the bicyclists “riding single file.”</p>
<p>Around 2 p.m. police were called to a residence on Cox Lane in Cutchogue after someone saw “two small children … in the residence near second story windows,” and no one was answering the door. Upon arrival, a 35-year-old Cutchogue woman answered the door and spoke to the complainant and police. There were no further details in the police report, but the report indicated an “ongoing CPS [Child Protective Services] case.”</p>
<p>Around 9 p.m., police were notified about a silver Chevrolet Avalanche “running vehicles off the road” near Main Road and Wickham Ave. in Mattituck. Police canvassed the area but did not locate the vehicle in question.</p>
<p><strong>Sept. 12</strong> – Around 11 a.m., at the request of Suffolk County police, Southold police located and arrested <strong>Daniel Conaty</strong>, 36, of Mattituck, in reference to “active charges against him from a prior domestic incident,” according to a police report. He was transported to Riverhead and turned over to the custody of county police.</p>
<p>Around noon, police responded to a report of an intoxicated male “passed out” in Mitchell Park. Police responded and spoke with the man, who “stated he was taking a nap and everything was fine.” He left the area without incident, according to a report.</p>
<p>Around 3 p.m., police were called to waterfront restaurant on Main St. in Greenport. The manager told responding officers that a 47-year-old Mastic Beach man had approached her earlier in the afternoon after allegedly receiving “multiple concerning text messages” from the “head chef” at the restaurant. An investigation is ongoing.</p>
<h2 id="h-something-fishy">Something fishy </h2>
<p><strong>Sept. 13</strong> – Around 1:30 a.m., a North Sea Drive resident contacted police about “two large parties” along the beach, including people pointing flashlights into his residence. Responding officers made contact with a group of individuals, one of whom — a 20-year-old Elmhurst man — told police “they are not from the area and were not fishing.” Police observed fishing poles in the parking lot, but “the group of individuals were not fishing at this moment.” The cars in the parking lot did not have Southold Town parking permits, so the group was directed to leave the beach, which they did.</p>
<p>Around 5 p.m., a patrol officer observed a car “parked with the rear wheels in the roadway and front tires parked in the shoulder, creating a traffic hazard” near the corner of Moores Lane and North Road in Greenport West. According to a police report, the car was running, the hazard lights were on, with a “subject in the driver’s seat, appearing to be asleep.” <strong>Gabriel Serrano Torres</strong>, 43, of Shelter Island, was found to be intoxicated and arrested, the report said.</p>
<p><strong>Sept. 14</strong> - Around noon, Southold police received a call about smoke coming from the rear of a bagel shop in Mattituck Plaza. A small piece of cardboard had caught on fire in the back storage room that spread to a shelving unit containing boxes and plastic cups. The building's sprinkler system extinguished the fire, but Mattituck, Cutchogue and Jamesport firefighters responded to the scene. A county fire marshal determined that the cause of the fire was accidental, according to a police report.</p>

Responding officers spoke to a 29-year-old Greenport West man, who told cops he wasn’t peeing or drinking, but instead “pulled over to observe a DOA [dead on arrival] deer in the roadway.” Police observed the dead deer themselves, and contacted state police for removal of the carcass.

Around 11:30 p.m., police were called to a location near the corner of Arshamomaque Ave. and Orchard Road in Southold for a report of a “pungent odor” that had first been smelled earlier in the day but had become “more potent” as evening set in. It was described as a “strong fertilizer smell.” Police canvassed the area but were unable to locate the source of the smell. They advised the complainant to contact police again in the morning if the smell persists, and a more thorough search of the area could be conducted.

Cone rage 

Sept. 11 – Around 8 a.m., police received a report from a Sterlington Commons resident in Greenport, in which a 52-year-old Greenport woman claimed that a 56-year-old neighbor had “stolen her traffic cone from a [restaurant]-assigned parking space.” She told police she observed the man “run over her traffic cone multiple times, and that he had also moved it behind a gate fence in the corner of Sterlington Commons.” Police spoke to the 56-year-old, who told them “he did not steal the traffic cone, but did see a cone placed in the corner of Sterlington Commons.” The man agreed to be more “mindful” of traffic cones in the future.

Around 11:30 a.m. police were called to Southold Town Justice Court for a report of a disturbance, and arrested 22-year-old Jonathan Coonan of Mastic.

Around 1:30 p.m., police were called to Main Road in Cutchogue for a report of a group of cyclists “riding four across the roadway.” A responding officer located the bicyclists “riding single file.”

Around 2 p.m. police were called to a residence on Cox Lane in Cutchogue after someone saw “two small children … in the residence near second story windows,” and no one was answering the door. Upon arrival, a 35-year-old Cutchogue woman answered the door and spoke to the complainant and police. There were no further details in the police report, but the report indicated an “ongoing CPS [Child Protective Services] case.”

Around 9 p.m., police were notified about a silver Chevrolet Avalanche “running vehicles off the road” near Main Road and Wickham Ave. in Mattituck. Police canvassed the area but did not locate the vehicle in question.

Sept. 12 – Around 11 a.m., at the request of Suffolk County police, Southold police located and arrested Daniel Conaty, 36, of Mattituck, in reference to “active charges against him from a prior domestic incident,” according to a police report. He was transported to Riverhead and turned over to the custody of county police.

Around noon, police responded to a report of an intoxicated male “passed out” in Mitchell Park. Police responded and spoke with the man, who “stated he was taking a nap and everything was fine.” He left the area without incident, according to a report.

Around 3 p.m., police were called to waterfront restaurant on Main St. in Greenport. The manager told responding officers that a 47-year-old Mastic Beach man had approached her earlier in the afternoon after allegedly receiving “multiple concerning text messages” from the “head chef” at the restaurant. An investigation is ongoing.

Something fishy 

Sept. 13 – Around 1:30 a.m., a North Sea Drive resident contacted police about “two large parties” along the beach, including people pointing flashlights into his residence. Responding officers made contact with a group of individuals, one of whom — a 20-year-old Elmhurst man — told police “they are not from the area and were not fishing.” Police observed fishing poles in the parking lot, but “the group of individuals were not fishing at this moment.” The cars in the parking lot did not have Southold Town parking permits, so the group was directed to leave the beach, which they did.

Around 5 p.m., a patrol officer observed a car “parked with the rear wheels in the roadway and front tires parked in the shoulder, creating a traffic hazard” near the corner of Moores Lane and North Road in Greenport West. According to a police report, the car was running, the hazard lights were on, with a “subject in the driver’s seat, appearing to be asleep.” Gabriel Serrano Torres, 43, of Shelter Island, was found to be intoxicated and arrested, the report said.

Sept. 14 - Around noon, Southold police received a call about smoke coming from the rear of a bagel shop in Mattituck Plaza. A small piece of cardboard had caught on fire in the back storage room that spread to a shelving unit containing boxes and plastic cups. The building's sprinkler system extinguished the fire, but Mattituck, Cutchogue and Jamesport firefighters responded to the scene. A county fire marshal determined that the cause of the fire was accidental, according to a police report.

All individuals named in police reports are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. Charges may be reduced, dismissed or result in an acquittal.
