On Sunday, June 22, Southold police were called to Wunneweta Road in Cutchogue, where a homeowner had discovered a hand grenade while cleaning out a shed, believed to have been left by a previous owner of the house a decade earlier. The homeowner told police he purchased the property ten years ago and had never cleaned out the area of the shed where he located the grenade. Before police arrived, he moved the grenade out of the shed and away from the house. Suffolk County Police Dept. Emergency Response Unit were called, and determined that the weapon was not a threat and disposed of it without incident.
Later that evening, Southold Police patrol officers and Marine Units joined the Cutchogue Fire Dept. in responding to a report of a boat sinking off Duck Pond Point. About a half mile offshore, four people in life jackets were clinging to the side of the partially submerged boat. A passing boater reached the scene ahead of local authorities, and brought them ashore — where they were evaluated and declined further treatment.
On June 16, the owner of farm on Sound Ave. in Mattituck called police to report that a neighbor who shares part of a driveway has repeatedly “peel[ed] out on the grass.” The farmer said he has young children and worries about the neighbor’s “aggressive” driving. He told police he put down gravel on the section of driveway they share, and said the neighbor will “accelerate fast and then slam on his brakes in order to ruin the gravel.” The farmer said he wanted only to document the incident.
On June 18, Bernadette Buckley, 58, of Southold was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, after police received a complaint from a pedestrian who said they were almost hit by the car as it drove down Route 25 near the Southold 7-Eleven.
On June 18, police received a report of damage done to a Mattituck park bathroom. A park employee told police that one male and two females in their late teens or early 20s repaired to the park bathroom, where they allegedly remained for about two hours. “Inside the bathroom, the subjects are believed to have cut the male subject’s hair and then dyed” it, according to a police report, which notes that hair was left all over the floor and that the dye had stained the bathroom stall walls, door, toilet, floor and sinks, causing about $200 in damage. The park employee declined to press charges, but if the subjects are located, wants them to pay for the damage.
On June 19, Mitchell Park staff contacted Southold police to report that an intoxicated man was drinking and playing the public piano on the boardwalk. A responding officer observed an empty can of alcohol beside him. The man denied that that can was his, and was escorted out of the park without incident.
On June 19, Louis Dodard, 51, of Farmingville was arrested for alleged driving while intoxicated, after police observed the car he was driving fail to maintain its lane “multiple times,” authorities said.
On June 20, Alan Arrata-Quesada, 42, of Queens Village, was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated, following a traffic stop on Main Road near the Greenport 7-11. Police said theat when Arrata-Quesada wa pulled over, an open can of “White Claw” hard seltzer was sitting in the car’s console. Throughout the arrest, according to police, Arrata-Quesada was “uncompliant” and declined some sobriety tests. During processing, police said, Arrata-Quesada used a common slur to insult a female officer.
On June 22, around 3 p.m., a Greenport man contacted police to report that someone had smashed the windshield of his car and then taken off running south on Carpenter St. When police responded, they could not locate the caller, who failed to answer the door at his house or his cell phone.
