A Jamesport nursery that has served North Fork gardeners for more than 30 years will host one final community event before closing its doors.
North Fork Contemporary is partnering with Colorful Gardens for “Growing America: Art in the Hothouse,” an exhibition featuring sculptures by 16 artists displayed among the plants and flowers at the nursery at 1636 Main Road in Jamesport.
The exhibition will serve as a farewell to the community from Colorful Gardens, the longtime nursery owned by Michele DeVito, as it prepares to close.
“Growing America” explores American identity through the work of 15 East End artists and one visiting artist, with the nursery’s greenhouse serving as an unconventional gallery.
“‘Growing America’ examines the ways artists cultivate ideas much as gardeners cultivate landscapes,” North Fork Contemporary Director Cliff Baldwin said. “The greenhouse provides a remarkable environment where sculpture and plants can coexist, each transforming how we see the other.”
The participating artists are Bill Albertini of Mattituck; Cliff Baldwin and Marta Baumiller of Aquebogue; Bennett Blackburn of Peconic; Sylvia Cedeño of Mattituck; Louise Eastman of Sag Harbor; Seung Lee and Adam Straus of Riverhead; Arden Scott of Greenport; Michael Stoughton of Memphis, Tennessee; Peter Treiber, Allan Wexler, Ellen Wiener and John Wittenberg of Southold; Annemarie Waugh of Setauket; and Marianne Weil of Orient.
A preview will be held Friday, Sept. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by an opening reception Saturday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.
The exhibition will also be open for viewing from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, and Saturday, Oct. 3.
